Creatures With The Most Prolific

Creatures With The Most Prolific Ears

Animals have different types and shapes of ears. But whatever the size, the shape or the appearance of the ears - one thing is definite - they are use primarily for sense of hearing. It also plays a vital role in the sense of balance and body position. See some of the most peculiar ears in the world.

The man on the above photo is certainly one of the few persons in the world to have the most peculiar and very large pair of ears. I bet you can never sneak on him.

The most common and popular ornamental for the ears are earrings. Modern fashion for the ears nowadays is to have multiple earrings. Aside from that, some people add large ornaments on their earlobes. These objects are usually larger than the size of the earlobe; they do these by stretching the earlobes.

The above-photo of a cat is surely bizarre. This cat has four ears, truly peculiar!

HERE ARE SOME ANIMALS WITH AWESOME EARS

Jerboa

The Long-eared Jerboa is one of the animals with exceptionally large ears in the world in relation to its body size. Its head and body length measures 70mm to 90mm while its tail is double this size, between 150mm and 163mm. Like its disproportionately long tail, its hind feet are also large, helping it to jump high, measuring between 40mm and 46mm. It weighs 23.7g to 37.8g.

The Long-eared Jerboa, a nocturnal mouse-like rodent, can be found in the deserts of Trans Altai Govi Desert and Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

African Elephant

In over-all size, the African Elephant is the sure winner. Its large pair of ears is 42 inches in diameter or 107 cm. The large flapping ears of an elephant are very important for temperature regulation. On hot days, elephants will flap their ears constantly, creating a slight breeze. This breeze cools the surface blood vessels, and then the cooler blood gets circulated to the rest of the animal's body. The ears are also used in certain displays of aggression and during the males mating period. Males will fan their ears in an effort to help propel the "elephant's cologne" in great distances.

Basset Hound

Many breed of dogs have large ears. One of them is Douglas, a 6 year-old red & white Basset Hound. Basset Hound is an old breed of dog with extremely long ears. It was developed in France and Belgium. The Basset Hound was bred to hunt. He is a slow, trailing dog but with tremendous stamina and deliberateness. It has a nose second to that of a Bloodhound. This dog is peaceful, sensible, affectionate and simply marvelous with children. Bassets are fairly long-lived with a median lifespan of 10-12 years.

This Basset Hound is believed to be the dog with the largest ears in the whole wide world. Mr. Jeffries, a Bassett hound whose ears are each 11.5 inches long is owned by Phil Jeffries from England.

Long-eared Bat

Very small creature indeed but it has a prolific pair of ears and with a distinctive fold. The Brown Long-eared Bat or Common Long-eared Bat (Plecotus auritus) is a found in Europe.

An adult Brown Long-eared Bat has a body length of 4.5-4.8 cm, a tail of 4.1-4.6 cm, and a wing length of 4-4.2 cm. The ears are 3.3-3.9 cm in length, and readily distinguish this from most other bat species. They are relatively slow flyers compared to other bat species.

Black-tailed Jackrabbit

Rabbits are popular pets with large ears. Like other jackrabbits, the Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) also known as the Desert Hare has exceptionally large ears. It is common in the US and Mexico where it is found at elevations from sea level to up to 10,000feet (3000m).

Reaching a length of about two feet (60cm), and a weight from three to six pounds (1.5 to 3kg), the Black-tailed Jackrabbit is the third largest North American hare.

Long-eared Rabbit

This picture of a rabbit with very long ears was taken at the 2007 TN State Fair Hello.

Longest Rabbit Ears

The longest rabbit ears measured 79 cm in a complete span on November 1, 2003 at the American Rabbit Breeders Association National Show in Wichita, Kansas, USA. The ears belong to an English Lop called Nipper's Geronimo who is owned by Waymon and Margaret Nipper of Bakersfield, California, USA.

Fennec Fox

The Fennec Fox is considered the only species of fox which can properly be kept as a pet. Although it cannot be considered domesticated, it can be kept in a domestic setting similar to dogs or cats. The Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) is a small nocturnal fox found in the Sahara Desert of North Africa which has distinctively large ears. The ears can be 15cm or 6inches long compared to its body length of 40 cm or 16 inches long.

Steenbok

The Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) is a common small antelope of southern and eastern Africa. Ears are large with "finger-marks" on the inside. Males carry straight, smooth, parallel horns 7-19 cm long (see image left). There is a black crescent-shape between the ears, a long black bridge to the glossy black nose, and a black circular scent-gland in front of the eye.

Long-eared Owl

The Long-eared Owl - Asio otus of Europe, Asia and North America appears to have large pair of ears. These are not actually its ears - these are called ear-tufts, which are positioned in the center of the head. The ear-tufts are used to make the owl appear larger to other owls while perched.

Hope you enjoyed this. Thank you!

Nasa Moves Closer To Planetary

Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) January 23, 2012

NASA could test its payloads on Earth under realistic flight conditions before sending them into space by using a technology flown by Draper Laboratory last month.

Using the GENIE (Guidance Embedded Navigator Integration Environment) System, Draper recently fully controlled the Xombie suborbital rocket built by Masten Space Systems during a closed loop tethered flight at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. This successful first step brings the NASA Dryden Flight Opportunities Program closer to a new testbed capability that could be used to validate future planetary technology payloads.

Aircraft available to test NASA instruments today are unable to fly at the desired trajectories for planetary landings, and computer simulations are used to generate that data. However, a GENIE controlled flight vehicle could mimic a spacecraft?s final approach to the Moon and Mars here on Earth. Emerging and advancing future space technologies will then have the opportunity to fly their payloads terrestrially to raise their overall Technology Readiness Level and show that they are ready for use in space.

A video of the demonstration can be found on YouTube at: http://goo.gl/EhnDJ.

Draper plans to conduct a free-flying demonstration with GENIE and the Masten rocket later this winter.

The GENIE precision landing GN&C system was developed jointly between Draper and the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) under the Autonomous Landing Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) and Morpheus lander programs.

Draper Laboratory

Draper Laboratory is a not-for-profit, engineering research and development organization dedicated to solving critical national problems in national security, space systems, biomedical systems, and energy. Core capabilities include guidance, navigation and control; miniature low power systems; highly reliable complex systems; information and decision systems; autonomous systems; biomedical and chemical systems; and secure networks and communications.

Ski In The Am Golf

Farmington, N.M. (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, N.M. on a desert plateau at the edge of the snow -capped San Juan Mountains of Colorado, is beloved by many golf junkies. In fact, this municipal course is considered one of the best in the country. According to Mike Nordstom, an avid local golfer, ?Pinion Hills is wonderful, it has a strong design and there are no weak holes.? What is less well-known is that Pinon Hills is open year-round and offers some great, if challenging golf, in the winter months. Colorado golf fans have discovered this and head to Farmington as soon as the snow flies.

In this area of the Four Corners winter brings snowy nights that build a deep snow pack in the nearby mountains, often followed by bright sunny days with temperatures rising as much as 40 degrees by noon. For the bold and the fit, this provides an opportunity to ski in the morning and golf at Pinon Hills in the afternoon.

Below is a suggested itinerary for anyone up for the ski-golf day challenge. It is also a tour that will please the financially challenged. Fees at Pinon Hills and at ski slopes nearby are more than reasonable and there are affordable well-maintained motels in Farmington with rates under $ 100 a night.

9:00 a.m. - Get up and out and onto the La Plata Highway for a 45-mile drive heading north towards Colorado and Ski Hesperus. Hesperus is a classic, old-fashioned ski hill, a favorite with local ski buffs, snowshoeing fans and those of us happy sliding down hills on an inner tube. There are ski, snow boot and board rentals available. Hesperus has 13 downhill ski runs geared for skiers of all skills. The daily lift ticket is $ 32, $ 21 for children 12 and under. Tubing is $ 7 an hour. There is a food bar at the lodge.

1:00 p.m. - Grab an energy bar, take off the gear and head back down the road to Farmington. Turn left off La Plata Highway at Pinon Hills Blvd., drive to Butler, turn right and then left on Sunrise to Pinon Hills Golf Course. You can call ahead to book a tee time special, $ 35 for 18 holes including the cart, if you start before 2:50 p.m. For lunch, the course?s Grill on the Hill has a full menu. (After 3 p.m. the price for a twilight round of 18 holes is $ 25) The weather will be brisk, but the sun shines an average of 300 days a year on this high desert course and you will be playing one the country?s most acclaimed public golf courses.

5:30 p.m. - It's time to take a load off your feet. Consider a casual meal and special home-brewed beer at Three Rivers Brewery in downtown Farmington at 101 E. Main Street. It?s one of the city?s most popular watering holes.

Planning tips: Check the snow conditions in Hesperus and check the weather forecast for a calm and preferably sunny day. According to Nordstrom ?you may have a few odd bounces and have to pound a tee into the ground,? but ?when the wind is down in winter, it?s great to get out and beat it around the course.? Check the hotel golf packages on the Pinon Hills site. Check the Farmington Convention & Visitors Bureau site for other attractions.

Six Animals With Best

Six Animals With Best Sense of Smell

Animals have different ways to use their noses in detailed purposes. Some animals depend on noses to catch prey and others consider noses as one useful way to fight for territory. However, there are several species whose noses become the most prominent and attention-grabbling body parts with the best sense of smell.

The Bear

Though the brain size of a bear is one third of ours, its nose is much big and the part devoted to smell is five times larger. The inside surfaces of bears? nostrils are enlarged with folds to make room for thousands of smell receptors.

Their sense of smell is certainly the best of any land animal

The Shark

A shark can detect the tiniest blood drop from more than a mile away because two-third of its brain is dedicated to smell, even uninjured fish may face with many dangerous cases from the shark?s surveillance.

A smaller prey is attacked by a brutal shark

The Rat

Like dogs, rats can be trained to use their best sense of smell in stereo with each nostril working independently to detect land mines and the scent of explosives like TNT. At present, giant African pouched rats are able to complete the dangerous mission well.

The great advantage of using rats is that they?re cheaper to feed and train than dogs

The Pinocchio Frog

The Pinocchio Frog, a bizarre new species of tree frog discovered in the Foja mountains rainforest on the Indonesian island of New Guinea, has an unusual spiky nose. Interestingly, its nose points upwards when the male calls but deflates and points downwards when he is less active.

The frog was first found sitting on a back pack in the researchers? campsite

The Albatross

Most birds often have a poor sense of smell but the albatross is an exceptional. It spends much time hovering above the ocean to look for food and its extra-large nose on top of the beak will help detect food floating on the sea, even in dark sky.

Albatrosses are hovering above the ocean to find food

The Star-Nosed Mole

The star-nosed mole, a small and weird-looking mammal, is found in the wetlands of eastern North America ranging from Canada to Georgia. Because this mole lives in almost complete darkness like underground tunnels, it is virtually blind. Therefore, the mammal mainly depends on its remarkable-looking star-shaped nose to locate food.

The star-nosed mole?s nose can play many roles like feeling, smelling and seeing
